PITTSBURG COUNTY, Ok — An 11-year-old boy woke his family and saved their lives after a fire broke out in their home just after midnight on Tuesday, Aug. 19 in the community of Canadian Shores in Pittsburg County.

"My husband just flew out of bed all of a sudden and I didn't know what was wrong and so I got up and it looked like there was a campfire in their bedroom and it was two inches from where my eldest boy's face is usually at," Dedmon said.

Her son, 11-year-old Remington, was the first to notice the fire.

"I was in my bedroom asleep and it was about 1:00 and all of a sudden, I heard this pop next to my bed. I woke up and I saw the fire starting to climb up my bedframe and so I jumped out of bed and got mom and daddy," Remington said.

The flames were dangerously close to where Remington was sleeping, and it was his screams that woke his father.

"What woke my husband up was him screaming fire, fire. We tried to put it out but it got too smokey in there and we couldn't see," Dedmon said.

The parents got all 5 children out safely, but when they tried to call for help, their phones were trapped inside the burning home.

"So I had to run down the street screaming and hoping that somebody would wake up and hear me to call the fire department," Dedmon said.

By the time firefighters arrived, it was too late. The family lost their home and everything in it, including more than a dozen cats. A camper belonging to Dedmon's mother, which was on the property, was also damaged.
