Was Wednesday's quake the strongest in Oklahoma?

Posted

Wednesday evening USGS recorded a 4.8 earthquake in Oklahoma, but was it the strongest shake the state’s felt in history?

Reports of apartments rumbling, books falling off shelves and people being awakened in the night are all telltale signs of a strong earthquake but the official magnitude cannot be determined until USGS designates a specific number.

The quake that shook most of Green Country Wednesday evening was recorded as a 4.8 and surprisingly enough, that’s not the highest recorded earthquake in Oklahoma. According to the Oklahoma Geological Surveywebsite, the highest recorded earthquake was rated a 5.6 in November 2011.

The earthquake recorded on Jan. 6, 2016 did measure close to being in the top five largest earthquakes in Oklahoma, though.
