Police have identified the suspect as Eric Portillo, 37.

Officials say officers were driving near Garnett and East 21st Street on Saturday around 1 p.m. when they heard gunshots.

Shortly thereafter, officers saw Portillo jumped into a car going east on Garnett with a gun in his hand, police say.

Police say after a few minutes, the woman driver jumped out of the car, and the passenger moved into her seat and continued the chase into a neighborhood off East 28th Street.

Portillo climbed over the car while holding a gun, police say.

Officials say police then shot multiple times injuring Portillo, who later died at the hospital.

The original driver, police say, is in custody.

Police say the officer involved has not been identified and will be put on administrative leave during the investigation.
