Suspect sentenced in high-speed chase that ended near Nowata

Posted

The man accused of leading officers on a vehicle pursuit that eventually ended near Nowata has been sentenced.

Cody Mathews, 25, was sentenced Friday to eight years in custody and seven suspended after leading officers on a 45 minute chase down Highway 169, driving an allegedly stolen truck in June 2015. Mathews was arrested on one count of possession of stolen vehicle, eluding a police officer and two counts of running a roadblock.

Mathews recently filed a lawsuit claiming use of excessive force against three police officers. Allegations of excessive force surfaced after police arrested Mathews. One Owasso officer was placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation due to the claims.

The police officers claim that Mathews resisted arrest and a Nowata police officer had to use a Taser on him.
