KONOWA, Okla. — Officials say the man who slammed his car into the bus carrying the Konowa Junior High School softball team was not on drugs at the time of the crash.

On March 8, John Tallbear’s SUV crashed into the team’s bus on U.S. 377 south of Bowlegs, killing 12-year-old Rhindi Isaacs. Tallbear and a passenger also were killed.

The school district believes Tallbear was intoxicated when he crashed into the bus.

The medical examiner says his body texted negative for drugs, but they couldn’t test for alcohol because his body was severely burned.

Records show Tallbear was arrested for driving while intoxicated twice in the weeks leading up to the deadly crash.
