An east Tulsa couple jumped out of a front window to escape a fire in their apartment.

Capt. Ben Weaver, with the Tulsa Fire Department, says they got the call around 3:20 a.m. Wednesday about a fire at the Sheridan Apartments located near East 6th Street and South Sheridan Road.

When firefighters arrived on scene, Weaver says heavy smoke was visible from the apartment, and they quickly determined the fire was located near the apartment door.

Weaver says the fire started near a chair and then spread up a wall and into the ceiling.

The couple inside, according to apartment manager Walter Smith, managed to escape by jumping out a window on their single story apartment.

“They just said that their apartment was of fire, and they couldn’t get out. So they came out the window, and I went over there to make sure everybody was safe,” he said.

The couple was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Tulsa firefighters are searching for a cause in the fire.

Sheridan between 6th and 8th streets was closed for about two hours as crews worked.
