This weekend the skies will clear, the temps will drop and we will see our first freeze of the season here in Green Country.
When the season change there are always procedure you need to take to protect your home and family from the extreme cold - and this includes our furry friends!
It is a good rule of thumb - if you wouldn't leave your child outside unprotected from the cold, then you shouldn't leave your pet that way, either. Sometimes we may forget our sweet friends outside, but they definitely need our help to stay healthy and warm when it is so cold.
It is always a good idea to try to keep them in the house or garage when it gets below freezing overnight, but if you can't do that here are a few simple tips to keep them safe.
First, make sure they have adequate bedding. They need straw or blankets in their pet house to keep them warm, and also make sure the door to their house is facing away from the strong north wind. That protection from the north wind is important in keeping them warm!
Second, make sure they stay hydrated! Like humans, they need water. It is best to try to keep their water bowl fresh so it doesn't freeze over.
And finally, pets living outside during the winter months will need a protein rich diet to keep them healthy and happy!
