OWASSO, Okla. — Owasso senior receiver Trey Goins scored a 14-yard touchdown in Friday's opener against Edmond Santa Fe. He crossed the goal line wearing a new number — one with special meaning.

In December 2017, Trey's former lacrosse coach Scott Smith passed away. Trey remembers Smith as a mentor who loved the game, moving from Connecticut to teach it to the next generation.

"He embraced the game somewhere he had never been before," Trey said. "He taught everyone how to fall in love with it and have fun with it."

Smith wore the number six in college at Johns Hopkins, a lacrosse powerhouse. So, Trey found it fitting to rep that same number in his final season in a Ram uniform.

"That's the real significant meaning behind it," Trey said, "Also, wearing a single digit here is one of the most respected things you can do on the football team."

Trey hopes to channel his coach's leadership in his senior year, and help lead Owasso to a second state title in a row.
