TULSA - Earlier this season, the University of Tulsa football team made a miraculous comeback from 31 points behind against Fresno State to eventually win that game. Apparently the Golden Hurricane had one more miracle in their back pocket Friday night as they won despite trailing against Cincinnati by 17 points.
TU won 40-37 in overtime as running back James Flanders closed out a record-setting night with a 4-yard touchdown run.
The Golden Hurricane never led in this game until Flanders' game-winning TD. TU is 4-0 in overtime games the past two seasons under head coach Philip Montgomery.
A key play in the overtime winning drive was a third-down catch made by Josh Atkinson, who went high in the air to pull down a pass from Dane Evans at the 4-yard-line. That set up Flanders' heroics.
The Hurricane ran for 306 yards and passed for 305 including 197 on the ground from Flanders. He finished the night surpassing 1,500 yards for the season. Evans' 305 yards pushed him past the 3,000-yard mark through the air. Flanders set the school mark with most yards rushing in a season with 1,529 and he still has a bowl game to go. He passed Tarrion Adams' record of 1,523 set in 2008.
