MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Brewers' long-awaited home opener against the St. Louis Cardinals has been postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests.

The Cardinals confirmed Friday that two players had tested positive for COVID-19. The Brewers later confirmed in a statement that the game, scheduled for Friday afternoon, had been postponed.

MLB Network insider Jon Heyman was the first to report the news on Twitter. The New York Post's baseball columnist Joel Sherman confirmed Heyman's reporting minutes later.

Cardinals beat writer Derrick S. Goold corroborated the reports of the postponement as well, adding that St. Louis players are now self-isolating in their hotel rooms.

The Brewers (3-3) were set to take on the Cardinals (2-3) at 1:10 p.m. at Miller Park.

Brewers President David Stearns released a statement Friday morning, saying that the team is supportive of the decision to postpone the game.

“We are supportive of Major League Baseball’s decision to postpone today’s game and look forward to playing our home opener as soon as conditions safely allow," said Stearns. "The health and safety of our players and employees are, and will continue to be, our top priorities."

The game will be rescheduled to Sunday, as a part of a doubleheader starting at 1:10 p.m.

The Brewers/Cardinals game is one of several MLB games scheduled for Friday that have been canceled due to COVID-19 outbreaks.

The Miami Marlins have already temporarily suspended their season through the weekend after more than a dozen players and staff members tested positive for the virus. They were scheduled to play the Washington Nationals.

On Thursday, the Toronto Blue Jays elected not to travel to Philadelphia for a weekend series after two Phillies staff members tested positive for COVID-19.
