The Oklahoma Music Trail calls itself “a tour of Oklahoma’s rich musical heritage (where you can) discover the famous musicians, venues and places that make the Sooner State a hot spot for music of all genres."
Many companies and organizations are known to support those in their local community and McDonald’s is a great example of that. After learning about some great music talents with Oklahoma roots, read more about McDonald’s new program, UNMUTED, that gives local artists a platform to create that special homegrown sound as well as offers fans a chance to enter a contest to win tickets to see some great Oklahoma talent.
Speaking of great Oklahoma talent, Sooner music legends boast a variety of genres. From jazz to country to rock to Broadway, Oakies have a definite claim to fame. Here are just a few.
Carrie Underwood
This local from Muskogee also started her career by singing in church and took off when she won American Idol in 2004. Since then, she has earned a shelf full of awards and recognitions including Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards and American Music Awards. She even gets a nod from Time magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People, and she has broken her record in the "Guinness Book of World Records." On her current tour, Storyteller, she shares the stage with a pair of Oklahoma brothers.
The Swon Brothers
As the opening act for Underwood's tour, this family duo — also from Muskogee — has a full tour. According to their website, "A testament to their immense talent and creativity is the fact that the duo not only penned every song on (their new album) “Timeless” but also played most of the instruments you hear on the recording." Zach and Colton got their start playing in their parents' band and expanded their career after taking fourth place on "The Voice." For their mentor on the show, they chose yet another Oklahoman, Blake Shelton.
Blake Shelton
The Ada-born native wrote his first song when he was 15 and is still going strong. In May, he released his 10th album. He has a presence in country music, Christian music, television and, most recently, the big screen where he lends his vocals and vocal chords to the movie "Angry Birds."
Kristin Chenoweth
This Tony-award winning actress originated the good witch role of Glinda in Broadway's "Wicked, the Musical." The 4-foot-11 Broken Arrow powerhouse got her start singing in church and has made a career on stage and in movies.
All-American Rejects
The rock band was formed in Stillwater. The All-American Rejects’ first big hit was "Swing, Swing" in 2003. Since that time, they have sold more than 10 million albums, with their next LP due out next year.
