Weather Blog: Where is all our rain?

Posted
and last updated

With as much flooding and destruction as we have seen across the nation from Harvey and Irma this past month, the lack of rain in Green Country may have been overlooked until now. Let's face it, we have had some very nice weather these past several weeks. It has been unseasonably cool, sunny, almost like living in southern California. But in all actuality, we are in need of some rain around here!

According to the Tulsa NWS, the last time we recorded even 0.10" of rain at the Tulsa Airport was back on August 23.  And for surrounding areas, it has been even longer than that! The Jenks Riverside Airport and Bartlesville both haven't seen measurable rainfall since August 16. That's almost a full month with no rain!

Thankfully, according to the drought monitor index, we aren't under moderate or severe drought conditions. But, if you're like me, you are starting to see some crunchy grass in your yard and wondering...when is it going to rain again?

Fingers are crossed that this weekend's "weak" frontal boundary brings us a little rainfall. According to some models, we are looking for 0.10" - 0.25" of rainfall by Saturday night late into Sunday morning. If not, our next chance will come by Tuesday of next week.

On average, September is usually our 3rd wettest month with almost 5" of rainfall recorded. At this rate, we will need a good soaking to get us there.
