The United States is prepared to launch a preemptive strike against North Korea should officials become convinced the country is about to follow through with testing another nuclear device, reports NBC.

Officials say the nuclear test could come as early as this weekend and North Korea has warned of a “big event.”

The U.S. has positioned two destroyers in the region, intelligence officials tell NBC.

On Thursday, the North warned of a “merciless retaliatory strike” if the U.S. takes action on the peninsula.

The news broke the same day as it was announced that the U.S. dropped the “mother of all bombs” or MOAB in Afghanistan.
