TULSA - New Heights rock climbing gym is excited for the popularity the 2020 Olympics Games will bring to the sport

New Heights Owner Jason Burks said the sport has already grown immensely in the past five years. He's climbed with people ranging in ages from 7 to 80. He only started climbing four years ago himself.

“Because of climbing gyms it’s allowed for it to be a legitimate sport across the globe," Burks said.

He expects the 2020 games to split competitive climbing into three events:

1. Speed Climbing: Who can reach the top the fastest.

2. Sport Climbing: Climber is attached to a rope, using clips to make their way to the top.

3. Bouldering: Climbing without a rope.

He said right now the sport is only popular where people can find gyms and teams. Rachel Nelson climbs for the Oklahoma Climbing team.

“People at school, when they find out I’m a climber they’re like, oh you climb on rocks?" Nelson said. “It’s actually a lot harder than they think it is.”
