Posted

Many people will celebrate America's independence near a grill on July 4 and it's time to dust off  safety techniques to ensure a joyous celebration.

According the National Fire Protection Association, more than 16,000 patients that visited an emergency room in 2014 were directly related to grilling incidents and July is the leading month of grill fires.

Below is a list of safety tips to consider when preparing to grill during the festive holiday.

Grill Location

All grills should be well clear of homes and deck railing when ignited. Never leave a grill unattended near a home in case of a fire.

Turning on the Grill

Make sure to always open the grill before igniting or turning it on. If using a propane grill, turn on the propane tank before twisting the knob to prevent an explosion. If grill does not turn on immediately, wait at least five minutes for the gas to dissipate before igniting again.

Turning off the Grill

When using a propane grill, turn off the tank before switching the knob to off. Following this procedure eliminates excess gas from leaking out of the tank.
