OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma City's top federal prosecutor says he plans to step down after six years on the job.
U.S. Attorney Sanford Coats said Wednesday he will resign effective Jan. 15. Coats says he plans take some time to plan his next professional move.
Coats was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2009. He was later confirmed by the U.S. Senate and sworn in on Dec. 30, 2009.
Prior to serving as U.S. attorney, Coats served as an assistant U.S. attorney from 2004-2009. He prosecuted a variety of cases including child prostitution, child pornography, banking fraud, tax evasion, crimes in Indian Country, illegal immigration, drug conspiracies, firearm crimes and violence by street gangs.
In 2007, Coats worked with the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Orleans following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
