ARKOMA, OKLA--    Investigators are working to determine what caused a fire that killed three children this morning. Police said they believe the fire started in the living room hallway area of the mobile home.

“They’re just wonderful kids. It’s so hard, it hasn’t even set in on me yet, they’re gone,” said Eddie Metzer.

Eddie Metzer said he wasn’t at his house this morning when his Arkoma mobile home caught fire, killing his girlfriend's three children inside.

“It’s hard to see 3 kids just vanish. Kids you spend 2 or  years with, and they’re gone, I don’t understand it,” said Metzer.

Arkoma Police said the mother, her friend and three children were sound asleep when the smoke detectors went off. They said the two adults were able to crawl out a window.

“The flames were shooting out the top and I had to get the mother away from the windows and she was trying to call in the windows and doors, she was trying to get back in the house and save the babies,” said Metzer.

“When the fire truck got here she was hollering, spray in that bedroom, spray in that bedroom, my babies in there,” said Neighbor James Mayhall.

But the children, ages 19 months, 6 and 11 years-old were stuck inside.

“I just hope they find out what caused it, and I feel sorry for the kids,” said Mayhall.

Now Metzer is picking up the pieces of what used to be a home. He said he just wishes he could have been there when the flames broke out.

“Maybe if I’d been there I might could have save something. I don’t know if I could or not, but I would give my life to save those kids,” said Metzer.

Police said the mother hurt her hand and had burns from trying to save her children. They said she is now in intensive care at a local hospital. The woman's friend is in good condition. Investigators said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
