OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has launched a formal inquiry into the death of an inmate in the Oklahoma County Jail.

The OSBI said in a statement Thursday that the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office requested the investigation on Sunday following the death of 58-year-old jail inmate Dale Stanley Schmidt.

The OSBI says county jail personnel found Schmidt's body hanging inside his cell. Schmidt was the only inmate inside the cell.

The Office of the State Medical Examiner has made a preliminary determination that the death was a suicide. The medical examiner's office is also performing toxicology tests.

Schmidt was arrested and booked into the jail on March 11 for lewd or indecent acts with a child under 16.
