OKC Zoo reports death of 4 yr. old elephant

Posted

OKLAHOMA CITY – Zoo keepers are mourning the sudden loss of one their beloved creatures.

According to the zoo’s website,a four-year-old Asian elephant named Malee died early Thursday morning.

The zoo says they noticed Malee moving slower than usual Wednesday, but otherwise she seemed fine. Then later in the day the elephant had a discoloration on her tongue, prompting zoo keepers to initiate protocol treatment for elephant endotheliotropic herpes virus. However, that has not been confirmed as the cause of death.

Malee passed away around 4 a.m. Thursday morning, despite the treatments and care.

Now, an animal autopsy is being performed to determine the cause of death. The OKC Zoo says it could take some time before they know the results.
