A San Antonio police officer has been fired after he allegedly gave a sandwich filled with excrement to a homeless person.
According to the San Antonio News-Express, the San Antonio Police Department fired officer Matthew Luckhurst after he allegedly placed fecal matter between two pieces of bread and gave it to a homeless person in July.
Officials reportedly learned about the incident after other officers came forward after they were “disgusted” by the rumors.
Luckhurst was a five-year veteran of the police force.
“Firing this officer was the right thing to do,” San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor said in a statement. “His actions were a betrayal of every value we have in our community, and he is not representative of our great police force.”
Luckhurst’s attorney told the News-Express that that his client had joked about giving the sandwich to a homeless person but never actually did so.
“We have very few bad apples in a barrel full of outstanding police and fire,” city councilman Joe Krier told the News-Express. “But it’s our job to get the bad apples out of the barrel as quickly as possible when they do bad things.”
