Lawmakers in Washington are trying to tackle a disturbing trend.

According to a federal study, Native American women are ten times more likely to be murdered than the rest of the population.

One estimate pegs the number of missing native women and girls at more than 5,700 in 2016 alone.

There is worry some victims are simply discounted by police because of their race or involvement in prostitution.

Two bipartisan bills going through congress right now - one aims to improve data collection on missing and murdered native women.
