A fire captain from a Boston suburb is accused of attacking trick-or-treaters with a golf club on Halloween.

Carl Holmberg, 44, from Revere, Massachusetts, appeared at a hearing Monday and is out on bail. He is charged with three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, WCVB reports.

Police said he had alcohol on his breath.

Holmberg's lawyer told The Boston Herald he was protecting his wife and son from teenagers who wielded a realistic looking – but fake – machete.

Holmberg was placed on administrative leave and is suspended with pay. His next hearing is Nov. 20.
