An attack by a swarm of Africanized bees has injured three people and closed down part of a golf course.
A news release from the city of Wichita Falls Thursday afternoon revised the number of injured city employees from four to three and said all three were part of a city mowing crew. The city earlier said three of those injured were firefighters.
The latest release said one injured man was treated at a hospital and released while two others remain hospitalized but in good condition. The most seriously injured was a man who suffered more than 1,000 bee stings, according to the city.
The incident began shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday when a person was reported suffering from multiple bee stings near the Tennis Center on Weeks Park Lane. First responders learned the city mowing crew had disturbed a beehive.
A city news release called the insects Africanized killer bees.
The tennis center and three holes of the Champions Course at Weeks Park will remain closed until the bees have left the area, according to the city release. The city urges residents to stay away from the area until they can confirm the bees are gone.
