The potential of bacteria has wiped out a slew of baby products from store shelves.

Nutek Disposables, Inc., of McEllattan, Pennsylvania, has initiated a nationwide voluntary recall of all baby wipes manufactured under the following brand names:  Cuties, Diapers.com, Fentex, Fred’s, Kidgets, Member’s Mark, Simply Right, Sunny Smiles, Tender Touch and Well Beginnings.

Some of the packages may contain bacteria, the company found after conducting microbial testing.

The wipes were distributed prior to Oct. 21, 2014 to the following retail stores: Walgreens, Sam’s Club, Family Dollar, Fred’s and Diapers.com.

The company received a number of complaints regarding odor and discoloration of the product. After conducting tests, the bacteria Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia) was found in some of the products.

On Oct. 3, the company voluntarily withdrew product lots of the wipes that tested positive. After additional testing, Nutek decided to withdraw all of its baby wipe products as a precautionary measure.

The bacteria B. cepacia poses little risk for healthy people, but those with health problems or weakened immune systems may be more susceptible to infections with B. cepacia.

Since the Oct. 3 recall, the company has received complaints including rash, fever, irritation, and infections as well as gastrointestinal and respiratory issues, though the reported symptoms haven’t been confirmed to be related to the use of the recalled products.

The company is continuing to investigate the cause of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased the product can return it for a full refund at the place of purchase. Consumers with questions can contact the company at (855) 646-4351.
