Each year there are always the hottest toys for kids, but if you want to look beyond the Hatchimals and the Fingerlings, there are plenty of alternatives kids may like and not realize they want.

Sallie Kashiwa is the owner of Timbuk Toys and agrees that children can be difficult to shop for, because they are particular with the things they like.

Kashiwa says, it’s best to go back to basics when buying for a child.

“One of our favorite things to recommend are wooden trains," Kashiwa said.

For little girls, Kashiwa says dolls are making a comeback.

“There is so much learning that takes place in the imagination play with nurturing," Kashiwa said.

If you are shopping for an older kid and are willing to spend a little bit more, then robots are always a hit. Also, science kits are another great option for both boys and girls this holiday season.

Another great idea that the whole family can enjoy, are board games.

Kashiwa said, “You know a lot of people love Catan. It’s not new but it’s a wonderful strategy game that many families love to play together.”

Remember each year there’s always a hot new toy, but like all fads they come and go. At the end of the day, it’s not the toy that matters it’s the child’s imagination.

"You put a child down to play and they are going to gravitate toward whatever it is that peaks their imagination."
