The bakers at Merritt’s Bakery have been making sweets for over 40 years in what started as a small cake shop. The Merritt family is determined to stay a Tulsa metro area favorite that's a sweet part of weddings, promotions, graduations, holiday gatherings, and many more family events.

Larry Merrit owns all three locations with his wife and son, Bobbie and Christian Merrit. The bakeries each sell sweet confections of all types from apple turn overs and blueberry muffins to cake pops.

Larry and Bobbie bought the 450 square foot shop in September of 1979. The couple only made cakes at the time.

"We did just cakes, but then people would ask if we would make them other things like pies," Larry said. "Everything was an add on except cakes, which is still our biggest seller."

The care in each cannoli and love in every lemon bar became what helped the Merritt's grow their business.

"Customers to us are everything. We come into work every day to make your cake special. Events that you have with your family, we want to be part of that," Larry said. "There is no better feeling anytime than to hand a birthday cake to a child, because that’s the passion we have.”

Recently, the bakeries haven't gotten to see as many of the customers they love so much.

"It's been very difficult. We are hoping that people will come by and buy some donuts, some cookies, something small they can take home with them while they are still in the house," Larry said. “We’re doing about 40 percent of what we normally would do. We did have to lay off a few people, but we are trying very hard to stay open so that there is a Merritt's to come to when this is over."

There is a Merritt's Bakery in Midtown Tulsa, Broken Arrow, and Riverside.
