A Wagoner couple combined their sense of humor and love of wine and turned it into a business, with a name that's hard to forget

Randy and Michele Orman support just about any good cause in their small town of Wagoner, so it was no surprise that the community has supported them in their wine business, with the unusual name.

There are lots of creative names for wines these days.

You can add this one - One crazy old fart's winery - to the list of those with catchy names.

Randy Orman, has had a financial planning business in Wagoner for 35 years, but 14 years ago he and a friend were both dealing with health issues and came up with an idea they thought might help.

"We both had high cholesterol and we wanted to take care of that without taking medication and so we started making Merlot," Randy said.

Randy's cholesterol went down, he got a new partner in his wife Michele, they got a license to distribute their wine to liquor stores, restaurants and at festivals.

"It's like doing the job you've always wanted to do with no boss other than yourself," Randy said.

The Orman's do everything themselves right here at their small office near downtown Wagoner.

They start by fermenting their seven varieties in vats for 28 days.

They'll get 265 bottles of wine out of each one.

The blends are all developed by Randy and Michelle.

The Orman's get their grape extracts from Canada, fill the bottles one at a time, cork, seal, label and put them in the box that they deliver themselves.

"Every bottle of wine that goes through here goes through our hands," Randy said. "We know exactly what we're putting out there."

And that's just the way the Orman's like it.

Small enough to keep the blends exactly how they want and they try to keep chemicals out and customers happy.

"A lot of women can't drink the red wine because it gives them a headache and they've tried ours because it doesn't have as many tannins in it," Randy said. "It doesn't give them a headache and they love that."

Turns out customers also like the name, but there was that one vendor who just couldn't get behind it.

"We've had a liquor store in Tulsa that said the name was not conducive with their clientele and I said... you're a liquor store," Randy said.

You've got to have a taste for good wine but also a sense of humor to hang with Randy Orman.

"One crazy old fart's winery and I would be that crazy old fart," Randy said.

If you want to taste the Orman's wine, they'll be at the Porter Peach Festival in a couple of weeks, and they'll be offering free samples.
