MAYES COUNTY -- A Vinita man is dead after a vehicle hit him on State Highway 28 in Mayes County.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said an Oklahoma City man was driving on the highway at about 1 a.m. near County Road 445.
Troopers said the driver noticed a man crossing the road, so he crosses the center line to avoid hitting him. But troopers said the driver was unable to avoid the pedestrian, who was identified as Bill Orton.
Paramedics took Orton to the hospital, but he died during treatment.
