MUSKOGEE, Okla. -- Shocking video shows an attack on a student at a Muskogee middle school.

Officials with Muskogee Public Schools said the incident happened March 7 at Alice Robertson Junior High School.

LaTonya Alexander was stunned when she saw the video of multiple girls piling on her daughter and beating the 8th grader. Alexander said, "I felt, more or less, helpless because I couldn't do anything. I wasn't there I felt like I failed her."

Her daughter, Alaiyah says it started in the cafeteria when group of girls began picking a fight with her friend. Alaiyah stood up for her friend and went in the gym for recess. The girls followed her.

The 8th grader said, “All I knew is that one girl started hitting me and that's when everybody else jumped in . . . At that point, I couldn't breathe."

Alaiyah says three teachers broke up the fight and the girls were sent home. The punishments ranged from in-school suspension to Friday night detention to community service. But Alaiyah says she was suspended for 10 days a month prior after defending herself in another fight.

She said, “I would've like for them to have been suspended for at least 10 days how I was suspended."

Her mother wonders why the punishments weren't equal, adding, “This happened kind of at the end of one week, and kids were back at school that following week. I was really upset about that."

Muskogee Public Schools sent 2 Works For You a statement saying that all students were supervised at the time of the incident and that the students involved were sent home and parents were notified once administrators found out what went on inside the gym.

The school district also says a thorough investigation was concluded and the appropriate disciplinary action was taken when that investigation was complete.
