TULSA -- Union High School students are dedicating this week to kindness.

SHAKA week, which stands for spreading hope and kindness abundantly, is focusing on the small things, like opening the door for someone or sitting with someone new at lunch.

"They were high-fiving me and smiling," junior Logan Vowels said. "It was nice seeing people's days affected like that, just to see that positivity."

The student leadership putting together the week said they want to do their part to make the world a little happier.

During the planning, they found out one of the students also looking to put a smile on people's faces, Kaylee Eddy, had brain and spinal cancer.

"She was always the sweetest always there, so helpful so amazing at everything and she has just the brightest face just to see around school all the time," Hannah Tobben said.

Kaylee was treated at St. Jude just days after being diagnosed. She underwent surgery and 33 radiation treatments.

Union's student leadership thought what better way to round out the events they had planned for SHAKA week than to donate to the place treating their friend.

"We just really wanted to show everybody how great St. Jude is and how much they are taking care of her in ways that we can't," junior Taran Stauder said.

The students are selling SHAKA week shirts. They got local restaurants to donate part of their proceeds. They also set up a GoFundMe page.

The students have already raised more than $3,200.

They want to help St. Jude help other people in Kaylee's position.

"SHAKA will help numerous families with getting the same support that we've gotten," Kaylee said. "St. Jude has been such a blessing for me and my whole family."

The students will have a table set up at the basketball game Friday night against Enid to collect donations.
