TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Public Schools is opening its second Montessori program at Grissom Elementary School in the 2021-2022 school year.

Grissom joins Emerson Elementary School in offering the Montessori model, making it the second public Montessori offering in Oklahoma.

In Montessori classrooms, children can explore, discover, and select their work. The district said this model recognizes the importance of student choice in creating engaging learning experiences and building independent learners.

“We have seen such an enthusiastic response to our first Montessori program at Emerson, so it is really exciting that Principal Rowland and the Grissom team are bringing this model to another neighborhood school in our district," Superintendent Deborah Gist said.

According to the district, students in Montessori classrooms learn in multi-age groupings, and Grissom will offer Montessori for students in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten in the 2021-2022 school year.

In the first year, the district said Grissom would have a total of 100 seats available in its Montessori program: 55 pre-kindergarten seats and 45 kindergarten seats. Officials said the program would expand by one grade each year through the 2026-2027 school year.

“We are thrilled to bring Montessori to the Grissom community,” Principal Brent Rowland said. “If your child will be four years old on or before September 1, and you’re interested in exploring Montessori as an option, I encourage you to get in touch or attend one of our virtual enrollment events.”

The deadline to enroll is Friday, Feb. 12, 2021. To can enroll at Grissom online, click here.
