Tulsa memorial honors fallen firefighters Sunday at Tulsa Fire Museum

TULSA -- A memorial took place Sunday to honor Tulsa firefighters who have fallen in the last year.

Family, friends and community members took time to remember 19 active and retired Tulsa firefighters who died within the last year.

2016 marks the 20th year the department hosted the memorial at the Tulsa Fire Museum.

Chief Ray Driskell says they also like to thank family members for their loves ones' service.

"Firefighters are a very unique breed of people. When you come on a fire department in anywhere in the country, you are truly part of a family. So when those folks pass away, it's as if a piece of your heart also left."

Thew memorial coincides with the national memorial service,. Firefighters across the country recognized their fallen heroes in unison by giving a short alarm of sirens and lowering their flags to half-staff.
