TULSA--The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office is warning of a phone scam:

We at the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office have recently been made aware that someone is posing as a Deputy on the phone in efforts to scam people out of their money. The latest scam was a phone call to an elderly citizen where someone claimed to be a Deputy and informed the citizen that he missed a court date and owed money. He then proceed to give instructions to go purchase a gift card from the local Dollar General and then call back with the gift card number.
TCSO does not contact persons for missing court or with warrants and threaten them over the phone. Nor does TCSO call to collect money over the phone. Never send money to strangers that contact you by phone and never give them your credit card or gift card information. Under no circumstances agree to meet the caller in person to give them money.
The caller may sometimes becomes aggressive. If you think it may be scam, hand up the phone and call the local authorities. The calls are being made from a phone number with a 918 area code. The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office is now investigating.
If you have received one of these calls or have fallen victim to this scam and would like to file a report, call the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office at 918-569-5600.
