Several high school students at Nathan Hale High School are facing their first competition just a few short months after taking up a new sport.
Hale High school is fielding a group of mountain bikers.
Senior Tucker Romesburg is jumping high for his mountain bike race in Arkansas.
“Racing, it's really you have to have a really big endurance and I didn't really have that at the start, but I'm starting to build it up,” said Romesburg.
Just a few short months ago, the high school team was just getting its first miles on the trails.
“It’s been a really fun experience so far," said Romesburg.
“It's just riding with your friends. It's just really fun and then you think about a field trip, it's just a field trip, but it's even better because you go out of state and you get to ride even more bikes," said Sophomore Joseph White.
School administrators said the mountain bike team is more than just a sport.
“Also like the big picture here is teaching them self-motivation, perseverance, some of the things like when you get on a bike that you do to need to be successful and kind of translate that into the classroom," said Assistant Principal James Isaacs.
Now the team has coaches and support from community sponsors.
Bike Club is a partnership between local cycling teams and Tulsa Public Schools.
The program is currently in 13 elementary schools, one junior high and of at Nathan Hale High School.
