TULSA — A Tulsa Public Schools junior high student was taken into custody after being found with a handgun on Monday.

The incident happened at Central Junior High School.

Officials said individuals reported to authorities after seeing the gun. Campus police and school staff responded and secured the weapon and took the student into custody.

A TPS spokeswoman issued the following statement:

"The team at Central is working urgently to build a school culture where students feel safe and supported by the caring adults in their building. The quick reporting of a potential safety issue is an important example of what can happen when students are learning in a community with adults that they trust. The Central team, alongside of Campus Police, acted swiftly to ensure that students, teachers, and staff were able to continue the school day safely and without disruption."
