TULSA, Okla. — A shooting suspect fled the scene, swam across a small lake and hid in a drainage ditch before surrendering, Tulsa police say.

Jayverre Aguilar was arrested for shooting with intent to kill.

Police say an 18-year-old man was found shot in the leg in the parking lot of the Shoreline Apartments on S. 96th East Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses reportedly told officers the alleged shooter, later identified as Aguilar, fired after an argument with the victim.

TPD says Aguilar swam across a lake that runs through the apartment complex property, then ran along the Mingo Creek drainage corridor, where officers saw him run into a wastewater drainage pipe that is about 4 feet in diameter.

“Officers could hear the suspect inside, but he would not come out,” TPD said. “Tulsa Fire Department arrived and assisted officers with ladders and assistance in opening manhole covers.”

Aguilar eventually climbed out and surrendered, police say.

Investigators recovered rifle and shell casings were found in the parking lot they believe were used in the shooting.

The victim's injuries were non-life threatening and he is expected to be OK.
