Tulsa police awarded with sexual assault kit grant by the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance.
The Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) grant is for $1.5 million for a three-year project, officials said.
"The funding will allow us to develop protocols on finalizing the inventory, utilize a tracking database, prioritize which SAKs to test, identify an outsourced forensic lab to test the SAKs and create a victim-centered approach to notify victims of their reopened case," Tulsa police said in a statement.
Officials said the project is address the problem of kits that aren't submitted and to examine current criminal justice response to sexual assaults in Tulsa.
