TULSA, Okla. - The community is helping to rename the area of 61st and Peoria, which is known for crime and violence, in an effort to improve its negative image.
Leaders are holding an assembly at Marshall Elementary School on Monday so students can have the opportunity to vote on a new name.
Some of the options that were selected by residents living in the area include Mountain View, Hope Valley and Sunrise.
The new district name will cover the area from 56th to 65th Street between Riverside Drive and South Peoria Avenue.
Last month, the community came together at Johnson Park to kick off the "Ignite the Change" movement to spark positive change in the area. More than 300 people attended the event, which included free food, entertainment and children's activities.
Also, the Tulsa Police Department is taking a part in improving the neighborhood. In February, it named its first community resource officer, Popsey Floyd.
He is dedicated to the area of 61st and Peoria to foster good relationships between law enforcement and the community and reduce crime rate.
