Tulsa has Turkey Mountain.

Claremore has its mountain bike trails.

Now Tahlequah could be getting its own outdoor recreation area.

A group met on Jan. 11 with Tahlequah's mayor to discuss a plan to convert some unused city land on the city's northeast side.

Organizers are calling it 'Tahlequah Trails' for now.

With the Illinois River on the city's doorstep, the group wants to make Tahlequah an outdoor recreation destination.

"I’ve lived here for a long time and I enjoyed hiking most of my life and I got into mountain biking—all of my friends could not believe trails like that didn’t exist here and I would have to drive at least an hour to go ride,” said Chris Ray, Tahlequah Trails.

The group plans to present their plans this March in front of the Tahlequah City Council.
