TULSA -- A surprise arrived for hundreds of students at Jackson Elementary School, which should help them start the new school year off right.

More than 300 students received a new backpack filled with school supplies at a surprise assembly Tuesday morning.

The giveaway came because of a donation from the Graves McLain Law Firm in Tulsa.
The attorneys joined the Partners in Education program with the Tulsa Regional Chamber of Commerce to make this happen.

Tulsa police officers from the Gilcrease division also spoke to students and helped pass out backpacks, too.
Teachers, administrators and the attorneys said they hope this giveaway will provide a few things for the students and their families.

"I just want to see the excitement on their face about being in this environment and getting a new backpack," attorney Chad McLain said. "I think it's a small part of the learning part of the school, so we're really excited about it."

"It's another thing off their plate," Principal Elmer Thomas said. "(Families) can focus on other areas that they need to: food, shelter, utilities. They can focus on those things, and this is something they don't have to worry much about."

The giveaway is the first of its kind at Jackson Elementary, but the plan right now is to make this an annual event for the students.
