Residents Shop Local for Small Business Saturday

Shoppers have suited up for 25 years at Travers Mahan. The family-owned upscale men's retail store thrives on the local community, but as a small business they deal with obstacles.

"We do our best to do better than they do by service, finding lines that no one else has, we separate ourselves from the competition that way, said Travers Mahan, Owner of the store.

Their style works as the family business continues to succeed in the Tulsa area, and the business isn't the only thing with ties to Green Country.

"We both are from Tulsa we were raised here and we raised our family here in Tulsa so we have a lot of roots here," said Laurie Mahan, wife of Travers Mahan and Co-Owner.

Not only did Travers Mahan celebrate Small Business Saturday, but a birthday, too. Dusty the shop dog turned 13. The golden retriever is a staple to the family and a welcoming face for customers.

"She's been coming since she was nine weeks old and she's our shop dog and all of our customers know her and they come in sometimes just to sit on the floor and pet her," said Travers Mahan.

Mahan says it's important to shop local because the money goes right back into the community.

"People come in they talk about the roads and how poorly they are and this and that, and then they go and turn around and order things online and there's no tax involved," said Mahan.

The Mahan family loves living in Tulsa, and believes shopping local is special.

"This area would be not the same if we didn't have the great local businesses," said Laurie Mahan.

To celebrate the 20-year milestone in the Plaza Shopping Center, anyone who brings in 20 nonperishable food items for the charity, John 3:16 Mission, will receive 20 percent off any purchase.

A portion of proceeds from Small Business Saturday at Travers Mahan will go to the Oklahoma Alliance for Animals.
