We know healthcare workers are on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, and they are at a high risk because they come into contact with so many ill patients daily. But our viewers have claimed some healthcare professionals are not taking protective measures.
One viewer told the problem solvers, “My elderly husband was taken to the hospital yesterday. The EMSA personnel were professional, but they did not wear masks. Everyone at the hospital wore masks. Why not EMSA personnel who come into the house?"
An EMSA spokesperson explained, “Unlike the hospital, we have a prior contact with all our patients (911 calls) and can pre-screen for COVID-19 symptoms. In addition, we screen our medics for COVID-19 before and after their shift. Also, our medics must communicate with the patient on scene, and masks can sometimes make communication difficult. Finally, while we have plenty of PPE on-hand, we do not want to needlessly use PPE on calls that do not require it.”
