KEYS, Okla. — Large potholes in a Dollar General parking lot in Keys are causing headaches and safety concerns for local residents.
Sheryl Keeter says going to the Dollar General in Keys feels like she's driving on the moon.
"It’s a good little store but the parking lot is awful," said Keeter, a Keys resident of ten years.
She says the potholes in the parking lot off Highway 82 have grown deeper and wider over the years.
"You used to kind of maneuver around them but now there’s no way around them you have to drive through them," said Keeter.
After Keys Grocery closed in October in last year, Dollar General is the only game in town for a one stop shop.
"I have arthritis in my lower back so when I get off of work after sitting 8 hours, I don’t want to go fight the crowd at Walmart," said Keeter.
Residents say they love the store inside, but wish something was done about the condition of the parking lot.
"The service is good, the prices are good, but to get into the store you have to watch," said Joel Edwards Sr., another resident of Keys.
Joel Edwards Sr. is a double amputee, and now stays in the car while his family shops at Dollar General.
"I’ve hit some of the low spots in there and the rear wheels will spin and all of a sudden I’m at the mercy of someone pulling around the car," said Edwards Sr.
There are options for food shopping in Tahlequah about ten minutes away, but Keys residents want the convenience of their own local store.
"They need to fix the parking lot if they want people to shop there," said Keeter.
After reaching out to Dollar General's corporate office, representatives say they have vendors scheduled to start repairing the parking lot next week, weather permitting.
