A Tulsa shooting range shut doors on Thursday after a man shot and killed himself with a rented pistol.

Around 11 a.m. a 50-year-old man from the Owasso area walked inside the range on Admiral Place.

Police say the man put on protective gear for his eyes and ears then fired shots in a bay.

He then turned the gun on himself and pulled the trigger.

The people in the range quickly realized something was wrong.

Police say they tried to help but realized it was too late.

Officers say this is one of the most difficult discussions to have the victim's family.

"Sometimes the family knows that the person is going through some things and they think maybe I could’ve helped them, and sometimes they didn't realize it so then you have the family thinking maybe there’s something I could’ve done, and it’s tough, it’s so tough," said Sgt. Shane Tuell with Tulsa Police Department.

The investigators as well as the Medical Examiner were inside 2A Shooting Center all afternoon.

The name of the man has not been released.
