WAGONER, OK (KJRH) — According to the Wagoner County Sheriff, two parents were arrested in connection to the death of their 4-year-old son.

Steven Powers II and Tina Powers were charged with second-degree murder in the drowning death of their son, Steven Powers III.

Investigators say Steven Powers II admitted he was under the influence of drugs while taking care of his son and another small child at the beach on Fort Gibson Lake. Investigators say Tina Powers knew her husband was under the influence, yet decided to leave the children with him.

Steven Powers III could not swim, and investigators say neither children were wearing water safety devices.

"Absolutely it could have been prevented," Wagoner County Sheriff Chris Elliott said. "You have to look at this for what it is; this was an innocent, defenseless, four-year-old child that was left to his own devices on a swim beach."

Investigators say that Tina Powers admitted that she should have never left the kids with her husband.

Steven Powers II and Tina Powers have been booked into the Wagoner County Jail.
