POTEAU, Okla. — Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents are investigating after a LeFlore County Sheriff's Office deputy shot and killed a suspect who was holding a convenience store clerk at knifepoint in Poteau early Tuesday morning.

The incident happened at E-Z Mart Convenience Store at 1200 North Broadway Street at about 4:45 a.m.

Officials received info that a man was holding a female store clerk at knifepoint. A Poteau police officer and LeFlore County deputy responded to the store, and saw the suspect holding the knife on the employee.

The officer ordered the man to put down the knife, which he refused to do, officials said. The officer fired one shot at the suspect, who ducked behind the counter.

The sheriff's deputy then entered the store, and saw the suspect and clerk struggling behind the counter. She was still being held at knifepoint, officials said.

The deputy fired one shot and killed the suspect. The clerk was unharmed.

A friend of the clerk was inside the store when the incident happened, and called 911.

The medical examiner is working to identify the suspect.
