TULSA - Fire officials say one person is dead after a large fire broke out in an apartment complex in south Tulsa.
Tulsa Fire received the call around 3 a.m. Monday morning for flames coming from inside one building at The Park at Forest Hills, which is near the Oral Roberts University campus.
When firefighters arrived, those flames had already spread to the roof.
Additional crews were called to help battle the flames.
When they arrived at the scene, they discovered a man outside who suffered injuries from the fire and did not survive.
First responders did a primary search, then a more thorough search, but did not find anyone else inside.
Residents said it was a chaotic scene as they were trying to figure out what happened and began knocking on other resident's doors to wake them up.
"I just remember hearing knocks on the door and I just ran outside and there was huge fire," said resident Joslyn Saldivar. "Everyone was kind of screaming and I didn't really know what to do so I called 911 and sat back and the entire building was on fire and I thought I heard screams coming from the building."
The fire destroyed one side of the building where the victim was found, but the entire building has been evacuated.
Many families are now without a home, but officials said the apartment management was finding them a place to stay.
Officials tell 2 Works for You that 12 units were affected and four are a complete loss.
The Red Cross was also called to help them with more long term housing.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
