On This Day: NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Sr. dies at Daytona 500

18 years ago today, the racing world mourned when NASCAR legend Dale "The Intimidator" Earnhardt Sr. died in a crash at the Daytona 500.

He was 49-years-old.

On Feb. 18, 2001, during the last lap of the famed race, Earnhardt Sr. died when his car was hit by Ken Schrader and he crashed into the wall. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital due to head injuries.

NASCAR Vice Chairman Mike Helton sat down recently with NBC Sports about having to announce Earnhardt's death.
