OHP: One dies in Mayes County crash after driver falls asleep at wheel

MAYES COUNTY, Okla. — One person died early Friday morning in a crash near Chouteau after officials said the driver of a vehicle fell asleep at the wheel.

The crash happened just after 6:30 a.m. on US-69 southbound five miles south of Chouteau.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers said the driver of a 2009 Ford Flex fell asleep at the wheel while four other passengers were inside.

One of the passengers, Rita Simmons, 65, of Kansas City, Missouri, died in the crash.

Two of the other passengers were taken to the hospital. One was treated and released and the other was admitted in "good" condition. The driver and one other passenger were not injured.
