TULSA, Okla. — Many school districts are back in the swing of things, but thousands of Green Country parents are struggling to keep their families afloat.
As the pandemic takes a toll on the economy, a non-profit is switching gears to save lives.
'Rock Your Party', before the pandemic, had a simple goal, to throw free birthday parties for homeless, or low income children.
Now, Rock Your Party is about more than cake and balloons, it provides everything from clothes, to food, to even school supplies.
One local mom, whose life was turned upside down, was saved with their help.
She said she doesn't know where she would be without Rock You Parties CEO, Melissa Barron.
“Everything, all the money I had saved up, I had spent it. I didn’t know what I was going to do,” the Tulsa mom said.
This mom has a 9 year-old son, but took in four orphans, all her nieces. One lost her mother, and the others mom is in prison. She said she had to remove them from the danger they were in.
“I didn’t have a choice, I didn’t have a choice, those are my nieces, their moms are unable, so it, it was my duty. I had to,” she said.
This mom knew she couldn't afford five kids, living in a two bedroom house. It's why she's grateful Rock Your Party was there for her.
“Everything I was worried about, everything that I was like, how am I going to do this, how am I going to get them this, with nothing," Tulsa Mom said. "Since then I have clothes, I have school supplies, the kids have had birthday parties it’s been awesome.”
Listening to this story brought tears to Barron's eyes because she's been in her shoes.
“I’ve been in situations where I was homeless before. I’ve been through it before, so the last thing I want is another kid to go through it,” Barron said.
But this is just one of many moms Barron has helped.
“A successful non-profit is a non-profit that changes lives, and helps other people wanna change lives. And it becomes a chain reaction, so I am just touched by hearing her story,” Barron said.
Tulsa Housing Authority and Rock Your Party is partnering together to throw a Back to School Bash for moms just like this Tulsa mom.
It's Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Apache Apartments on Apache and Marion Avenue.
